Terminology Services and the DDC: the High-Level Thesaurus and Beyond

The presentation discusses emerging services for providing controlled terminologies and interoperability between them, the role of the High-Level Thesaurus (HILT) project, and the application of Semantic Web technologies. HILT uses the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as a terminology mapping spine or switching language between different monolingual (English) subject vocabularies. Pilot services offered by HILT include disambiguation of terms suggested by end-users, spell-checking of user terms, improving the precision of item-level subject searching by suggesting appropriate terms, and selecting catalogues for searching where the collection has subject strengths matching the user's search strategy. Examples from the Scottish Collections Network (SCONE) and the Intute service are given.

Business Coaching International

Transforming Individuals and Organizations

Business Coaching International investigates the significance, meaning and structure of the coaching intervention within the coach-client conversation, and takes a look at what, how and who you need to be to coach. At the heart of the business coaching process, irrespective of the model or approach, is the "relationship". This means that business coaching is not necessarily about "doing" for the client, but more about "being" - creating a safe thinking environment: a space where thinking, feeling, insight and creative decision making can take place. Applying the knowledge and techniques within this book will deepen your practice.

Young Business Leaders

Between Utility and Utopia

In a world of sweeping economic, political and social changes, what happens to our values, norms and identities? In particular, what happens to the identities of those actors who are exposed to the forces of globalisation? How do they make sense of their personal and professional lives when they must think globally and act locally? This book investigates these questions through an empirical analysis of the identities and lives of young business leaders in a France that has undergone considerable institutional changes over the last 70 years. The analysis offers an original perspective by investigating a case of puzzling robustness, namely the identity carried by a particular group of young business leaders, "Centre des jeunes dirigeants d'entreprise." Since its founding in 1938, this organisation has put forward the ideal that businesses should go beyond furthering the particular interests of their owners and aspire to work for the common good of society. For the individual business leader, this implies a need to reconcile two objectives: contributing towards making society a better place - creating utopia - and ensuring that his/her business is viable - ensuring utility. On the basis of a thorough historical and sociological analysis, this book sheds light on how to understand robustness in values and identities in a world of sweeping changes. Moreover, it takes the reader on a fascinating journey into a sector that is largely outside the attention of both the media and scholarly literature: the life-worlds of young leaders of small- and medium-sized companies in France.

Time Relaxed Round Robin Tournament and the NBA Scheduling Problem

This dissertation study was inspired by the National Basketball Association regular reason scheduling problem. NBA uses the time-relaxed round robin tournament format, which has drawn less research attention compared to the other scheduling formats. Besides NBA, the National Hockey League and many amateur leagues use the time-relaxed round robin tournament as well. This dissertation study is the first ever to examine the properties of general time-relaxed round robin tournaments. Single round, double round and multiple round time-relaxed round robin tournaments are defined. The integer programming and constraint programming models for those tournaments scheduling are developed and presented. Because of the complexity of this problem, several decomposition methods are presented as well. Traveling distance is an important factor in the tournament scheduling. Traveling tournament problem defined in the time constrained conditions has been well studied. This dissertation defines the novel problem of time-relaxed traveling tournament problem. Three algorithms has been developed and compared to address this problem. In addition, this dissertation study presents all major constraints for the NBA regular season scheduling. These constraints are grouped into three categories: structural, external and fairness. Both integer programming and constraint programming are used to model these constraints and the computation studies are presented.

Evidence for Intermediate Phase in Solid Electrolyte Glasses

Here we examine a dry solid electrolyte (AgI)x(AgPO3)1-x glasses in the 0 x 0.54 composition range, and provide evidence for existence of the three generic elastic phases (floppy, intermediate (IP) and stressed Rigid). IPs are marginally rigid elastic phases with unusual functionalities and excited much interest in the field. Our experiments have included Raman scattering, Infrared reflectance, modulated differential scanning Calorimetry (MDSC), AC electrical conductivity and molar volume experiments. Our experiments reveal that the physical properties of these glasses including the glass transition temperatures (Tgs) and the elastic phases display substantial dependence on handling of precursors in synthesis of samples. Previous reports on Tgs of AgPO3 base glass lie in the 163 °C
